on the Ground

To imagine, much less create, the world anew is profoundly rigorous work. Our concept “theory on the ground” honors the labor of turning Women With A Vision’s community work into the theory and vision to build the world otherwise. It roots our work in the generations of Black feminists whose fire dreams we carry forward every day. Our theory on the ground tethers us to the generations to come, as we work to build a world that is more survivable than our present. 

The steps above show you how every theory we’ve made is supported by and builds upon the next. Our work started from a commitment to Centering Black Women and Girls in everything we do. This is the foundation for building the world otherwise. Being in community in this way brought us to HIV Prevention Justice, Harm Reduction, and Sex Workers’ Rights –– three justice-oriented frameworks that demand we not only provide the tools our community members need to protect themselves, but also work with them to transform the world around them.

Reproductive Justice has anchored us similarly holistically in our people’s decisions to have kids, not have kids, and to fight for a world in which we can parent those kids into adulthood. Through our commitment to Abolition Feminism, we have steadily fought every facet of policing, imprisonment, and surveillance in our communities and our world. Black Feminism names the interlocking nature of the oppressions we face – sexism, racism, homophobia, ableism, and classism –– and also honors our community members’ lived experiences as the grounds of theory. We bring all of these theories together in our analysis of what we call the Racial Capitalism Playbook, and in the Counter Playbook we have developed to make Black feminist liberation in the South.
